Nonetheless, the available data misses the quantity contribution of litter wastes in overall solid waste generation. While visual impact of littering is very noticeable, the absence of legal framework and quantitative data present serious management challenges. Coined in community education, awareness and attitudinal change litter management is a core activity under the proposed Zanzibar Inter-Municipal Solid Waste Management and Recreational Authority.

Cleansing as it is to littering is very crucial in public hygiene and sanitation management, unfortunately, it is covered very little in the current local government by-laws. Such absence in the legal framework attracts an uncleanliness attitude, especially on the outlook of most buildings in urban settings. Envisioning good city view and aesthetics, the local government by-law should be reviewed to cover the demand, such changes should include too, management cost implications on the wastes generated. Through community education, awareness, and attitudinal change litter management is a core activity under the proposed Zanzibar Inter-Municipal Solid Waste Management and Recreational Authority. Through the operation design with reduce, reuse, sort, collect, transport, recycle, treat, and properly dispose techniques, the quantity of solid wastes reaching the landfill will be maximally minimized.

Identification of Greenery Infrastructures

Understanding and identifying the location, size, and level of demand visa-vis available reality of greenery infrastructure (GI) is the foremost step in greenery and city beautification. In most cases, GI is identified with existing protected areas and natural spaces, or based on a matrix of qualitative values for each land cover type estimated with expert opinions and the literature. Some of the key elements in GI are rain gardens, permeable pavements, green roofs, infiltration planters, green parking, tree strips, tree boxes, and rainwater harvesting systems.

Management of Greenery Infrastructures

Green Infrastructure Management Plans (GIMP) are procedures to manage any natural, managed, or other open spaces that form an interconnected network to conserve natural ecosystems’ values and functions, sustain clean air and water and provide a wide array of benefits to people and wildlife. The management component of GI involves removing trash, leaf litter, and debris; keeping plants healthy; and cleaning out accumulated sediment and pollutants. The number and expertise of personnel and financial implications are central to ensuring sustainability
